This is the story of how YOU, our outSTANDing Lemonaders, have helped families facing cancer in 2017.

YOU ARE A CHAMPION!

Meet some of the kids you champion

JACOB & JOSHUA

Jacob and Joshua are brothers, and their mum, Wendy, was diagnosed with cancer. It was tough for them to see their mum go through treatment.

But Jacob and Joshua went to the Cancer Foundation’s CLIMB program.

CLIMB stands for Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery, and thanks to our donors, it is there for kids who have a parent with cancer.

They learned that cancer is not a disease that is caught like the flu. They learned that it’s okay to express your feelings and it’s okay to cry.

Now Jacob gives his mum a kiss whenever she doesn’t feel well.

Learning how to express themselves has made the whole family better able to cope with cancer.

ELIZABETH

When Elizabeth learned that her father, Peter, had cancer, it was too much for her to take in.

Elizabeth was afraid to talk to her friends at school about how she was feeling. She also felt like she had to take care of her whole family.

Then Elizabeth found out from her mother, Martha, about the CLIMB program at the Cancer Foundation.

CLIMB stands for Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery, and thanks to our donors, it is there for kids who have a parent with cancer.

“This is exactly what I need,” said Elizabeth.

At CLIMB, Elizabeth met a friend from school whose parent also has cancer. Together they did activities and learned to share their feelings.

More than anything, Elizabeth realized that she wasn’t alone anymore.

MARCUS

Marcus is really young – he’s just two years old! Marcus loves to sing. He also loves to sit in his baby chariot behind his dad, Dan, and his mom, Melody, as they bike to their favourite cake shop.

It’s hard, though, because Marcus’s dad has cancer. And Marcus really wants to spend lots of time with the two people he loves most in the world: his mom and dad.

At first it was difficult for his dad to feel hopeful…he would often wake up in the night thinking about this monster he called cancer.

But his dad met with a Cancer Coach at the Cancer Foundation, and he found the skills to cope with his emotions and his worries about the future.

Now, everyone feels much better, especially since their family got even bigger.

Marcus is so happy to welcome a new baby brother: Elliott Daniel!

READY, SET, IMPACT!

Here are just a few ways that Lemonaders are making a difference.

COOKING WITH THE CLIMB KIDS

Nut & Seed Granola Bars

Serves: 20

Ingredients:

  • 2 large ripe bananas, mashed
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup pecans, chopped
  • ½ cup almonds, chopped
  • 1 cup pumpkin seeds
  • ⅓ cup dried cranberries, chopped
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup ground flaxseed
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • ¼ cup almond butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9″ x 13″ baking dish with a piece of parchment paper (with overhang).
  2. In a large bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. Stir in the applesauce, oats and vanilla.
  3. Add the pecans, almonds, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, ground flaxseed, honey, almond butter, cinnamon, and salt to the oat mixture and stir until combined.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan. Use your hands to smooth out the mixture until evenly distributed.
  5. Bake for about 25 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden.
  6. Gently lift the baked granola slab by grabbing the parchment paper overhang and place on a cooling rack until completely cooled.
  7. Once cool, slice into bars. Wrap up leftovers and store in the fridge for a week or store them in the freezer for a month.
